My book club meets for the last time on Thursday before we break up for the summer. I saw this in Private Eye and sent it to everyone as a gentle reminder that the book club isn’t just about having lunch and gossiping….

Very funny – love it! 😀
Very interesting! I’m just about to join a new book club.
I’d be grateful if you’d tell your members about the St Clementin bi-lingual literary festival at the end of August. The big name guest is Helen Dunmore. (I’m the small name guest.) http://segorastclementincelebratetheword.blogspot.co.uk/ Enjoy the French summer. (We’re not having much of a summer in England.)
Will do so, I’ll also see if I can send the word around the Bordeaux Women’s Club too. Hope to see you there.
We’re not having much of a summer either…
Love it! I have to admit that since I have always been allergic to organised activities (especially expat ones), I have never belonged to a book group. However, I do think you get another perspective from other people so I have friends with whom I talk books on an individual basis and we lend books to each other.
I belong to two book groups, both very different. One is strictly local and the emphasis is on the social aspect as much as the books so the discussions don’t tend to be that deep or go on for very long, though I’ve been introduced to some wonderful books and the other is international, English is the common language. I counted once and there were 7 French present, I Brit, 2 Americans, a Swede, a Russian, an Italian, an Austraalian and a Dane. There are some very clever women there and though we don’t necessarily read ‘heavy’ books the discussions aare always stimulating. The potluck lunches afterwards are great too!
Have to admit when the first book club I belonged to moved from a public meeting place to the private and the discussion went more ‘off piste’ more often, I stopped looking forward to it and eventually dropped out.
As one of our members said the vital thing is to have the book discussion before you crack open the wine and not after.
Hi there – award for you over at my blog if you have the inclination to collect it. 🙂
Aw Thanks, Susie. (Blushes.) I’ll have to do some thinking about who to nomininate, in the meantime it’s the book club and I’ve got to think of some intelligent things to say.
